Job Description

The U.S. Global Leadership Coalition (USGLC) is seeking an experienced Deputy Director of Communications to join our team. The Deputy Director of Communications will join a growing and creative communications team that works relentlessly to engage leaders in Washington, DC and across the country to tell the story of how U.S. global leadership helps build a better world and a stronger America.

At this moment of rising global threats, USGLC’s nationwide coalition of bipartisan political, military, NGO, and business leaders, makes the case to policymakers and the public that America’s continued engagement in the world is vital to our own security, prosperity, and values.

The Deputy will be an experienced, detail-oriented manager and communications professional with the skills to articulate and amplify USGLC’s message and mission, and to expand our constituency through active engagement with our community, our membership, and the media.

The Deputy is responsible for helping lead a communications team driven to win for our issues using a variety of dynamic platforms – whether curating the perfect targeted email, landing an op-ed at just the right political moment, or building a digital campaign that gets our message in front of top policymakers. This position reports to the Director of Communications and is based in Washington, D.C.

At USGLC, we are committed to fostering a culture of inclusiveness and belonging among staff, volunteers, and partners.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Communications Team Management. Provide mentoring and day-to-day management of an eight-person communications team, as well as external web vendors, writers, designers, and other communications consultants as needed. Track metrics and outcomes to identify best practices and strategies.
  • Communications Strategy. Help lead an aggressive and comprehensive communications strategy incorporating legacy and new media, paid and earned, and creative use of USGLC’s broad network and stakeholder community to break through the noise.
  • Media and Press Outreach. Develop, coordinate, and ensure implementation of media outreach efforts, including in regions, states, and localities with USGLC events and initiatives. Coordinate rapid response communications plans. Help build relationships with reporters at the national, regional, and local levels, and create media opportunities for USGLC initiatives, state network leaders, and events.
  • Message & Material Development. Help lead the writing and editing of fresh, provocative, and timely internal and external content for USGLC stakeholders. This content includes media messages, op-eds, talking points, and event-support materials that are designed to influence both broad audiences and busy policymakers.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • At least 7 years of media and communications experience in a media organization, Congressional office, non-profit, campaign, trade association, or similar environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, manage, mentor, and coach a dynamic group of professionals.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and visual communications skills for a variety of audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully utilize media and technologies for advocacy communications in multiple formats.
  • Strong organization skills and project management experience, with a proven ability to handle multiple projects and deadlines concurrently.
  • Dynamic people leadership and collaboration skills; experience working with people from diverse backgrounds.
  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, international relations, political science or a related field preferred.
  • Knowledge of international development, foreign affairs, and Capitol Hill are preferred.

COMPENSATION

A projected salary range of $85,000 to $120,000 will be offered, commensurate with experience and qualifications. The USGLC also provides a package of benefits, including health and disability insurance, retirement plan, paid annual and sick leave and federal holidays.
